Sorry!!
I forgot to update my page for homework!!! If this happens again, please remember that students receive Weekly Essentials every Monday and they always have vocabulary cards to make for homework. They will have a test on Friday for the vocabulary words.
We are also reading Freak the Mighty in class and students are responsible for doing Chapter Sheets for every chapter. They will be able to use these as a study guide when they have a comprehension test on the first 8 chapters soon. I have checked notebooks and several students are behind on these. In order for their grade to change, they must make these up.
Thanks!!!
Chapter Sheets are simple a sheet that asks for the chapter title and number, the characters of that chapter, the setting of that chapter and a summary of that chapter.

Reader's Notebook
I decided to make changes to the Reader's Notebook. Students will keep the front part as their novel and journal responses. The back part will be their CS or Language Arts notebook. Students will staple tests, Weekly Essentials, classwork, and homework in this part. I will have them keep the notebooks in the classroom every day but Thursday night. They must bring it in on Friday so that I can check their homework. We worked on this for the entire class today. I am hoping this will be helpful with organization and for showing parents their work and grades. Also, I hope to attach a sheet on the back cover where students will record their grades. Please take a look at their notebooks tonight. We are in the beginning stages of setting these up but they should have Weekly Essentials and vocabulary tests so far.

My homeroom is in charge of bringing in individual bags of chips. I think that you can by a large bag containing 22 small bags of chips for $7. This will be easier to distribute and each child will have their own bag of chips. Thanks for your donations! The picnic is June 6th.

Holocaust
Dear Parents,
We will start our first class novel, Boy in the Striped Pajamas, next week. The novel deals with the Holocaust and teaches a great theme, tolerance. Before we begin the novel, it is important that students have background information on the Holocaust. They will begin researching the Holocaust in a couple of days using a website from the social studies textbook and from the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum. Please review the websites listed below. These are informative websites which allow students to read and listen to videos about the Holocaust. We will do a basic research project of who, what, when, where and why. This can be a wonderful opportunity for students to discuss what they are doing at school with their family. I encourage you to talk with your child about questions that they may have as we study the Holocaust. Most students are very excited and interested in learning about the Holocaust. While the events of this tragedy are horrific and shocking, the rich educational opportunities that it encompasses can not be denied. It is my hope that each student will gain a new perspective not only on the world, but their fellow students as well. Teaching Tolerance is a constant theme in 6th grade literature and it is very important for students to understand and learn. Boy in the Striped Pajamas is an excellent novel and I hope they enjoy reading it.
Thanks,
Mrs. King

Welcome Back!
Welcome back from a much needed break! I hope everyone enjoyed their vacation. We are getting back to our routine of writing and reading. Students will be finishing the final draft of their essays so we can start typing this week. We will review short stories and have the final test on this at the end of this week. Please make sure that students have added detail to their stories. They may need to eliminate unnecessary events. Student should also have important dialogue in their story. I look forward to reading all of the narratives soon!
