Greek Mythology

We have started on Greek Mythology. Students will be working on a project that is due Thursday. They are to choose a god or goddess from Greek/Roman mythology to research.
They must include on their poster, cube, PowerPoint, or trading cards.
1. The name and an illustration of the god or goddess.
2. An illustration of a myth in which the god/goddess appears. Be prepared to summarize or re-tell the myth to the class.
3. Include a family tree (brothers, sisters, parents, etc.).
4. Include any evidence of the god/goddess in the modern world. Think advertising…..Nike tennis shoes, Venus razors.
5. Include a map showing the location of the origin of your myth.

Grades will be based on accuracy of information, quality of information included and CREATIVITY!

Homework

I am sorry I have not updated the website this week. As you know this never happens but I have been very distracted with the 2 hour delay, presentations, and half day. Students have been working very hard on the presentations! I have been very pleased. Students who were not ready to present on Monday needed to work on their project at home. These projects (as well as their chapter sheets) were actually due on Friday. We cancelled the vocabulary project last week and students were to complete the worksheet for the following Monday. These words will be on the test on Friday. The vocabulary worksheet is Numbers 5-10. We will be working on these words today in the computer lab.

Novel

We have finished Number the Stars and students are working on their novel project. On Friday, students will take their final test on Number the Stars, turn in their chapter sheets and begin presenting their projects. Hopefully next week we will begin mythology and a grammar program. Students will continue to have vocabulary every Monday and tests on Fridays. Student should also keep up with their agendas.

Number the Stars

Next week we will finish Number the Stars! Students will complete all chapter sheets for a final grade. Also, Students will take a final test on the novel and they will have a final project on Number the Stars. After we finish the novel, we will begin mythology.

Against Vocabulary

Antagonist:  an opponent

Antiseptic:  something used to kill germs; free of germs

Antisocial:  unale to assoicate with other people; not sociable

Contradiction:  A statement that is opposite to another statement

Counterbalance:  A weight used to balance another weight; to balance or offset

Counterproductive:  producing the opposite of what is desired or intented

Oblique:  not straight; slanting; inclined, or sloping

Obnoxious:  Very unpleasant and objectionable

Obscure:  to make unclear; to conceal or make less obvious

Obstinate:  unyeilding; unreasonably determined to have one's own way 

Moving Away Vocabulary

Abandon- to leave or give up completely; to discontinue

Abdicate- give up power, authority or the throne

Abduct- to take away by force, kidnap

Abnormal- not typical, average or normal

Aboriginal- the original inhabitants of a country

Absolute- without restraint, not dependent on anything

Absolve- to free from blame, debt or responsibility

Abstain- to voluntarily refrain from

Abstract- not concrete or related to specific things; not easy to understand

Apogee- the point in the moon's or a satellite's orbit when it is farthest from the earth or the body it orbits

Vocabulary

Every Monday students are given a new vocabulary worksheet. Students need to study these words throughout the week. We will go over these words in class and students will be tested on these words Friday.

February 16th

February 16, 2009 will be the makeup day for the previous snow day. This is no longer a workday for teachers.

Progress Reports

I am sending home a progress report today. Students need turn in any missing work by Tuesday morning. I have to turn in all of my grades by Wednesday.

Novel

We are starting the novel Number the Stars after break. Students are more than welcome to purchase their own copy to read at home.

Ways to Move Vocabulary For Thursday's Test

Vocabulary Test postponed til Monday

Students have not finished their assignments on Study Island. We will be in the computer lab all day for so they can finish. Students will take the vocabulary quiz on Pro and Retro on Monday.

Sorry

I made a mistake this week when posting homework. ....... I was off a day (today is acutally Thursday not Wednesday)and I forgot to change Monday's homework. I hope you can forgive me :) Students will be working on Study Island today so the only homework tonight is to study for the vocabulary quiz. Since I have been posting my homework daily and not making any mistakes.....it was time for errors. :) Please let me know if I make anymore!

Help Your Child Become a Better Reader

What Can Parents Do To Help Their Children Become Better Readers:
*discuss what your child has been reading in school (& pleasure reading)
*take your child to the public library
*read the newspaper with your child
*get your child a magazine subscription
*let your child do the newspaper crossword puzzle (builds vocabulary)
*let your older children read to your younger children (both will benefit)
*let your child ask you questions about what you've been reading
*turn on the closed captioning on your television (to increase reading speed)
*read the books your child is reading in school so you have discussion topics
