We finished reviewing "Sydney Survived the Boston Marathon Bombing."  They will have a test on this story tomorrow.


Wednesday Night
Students must have 4 maps for the story "The Grinch" completed tonight

Map 1:  Bubble Map on reasons why someone does not celebrate Christmas
Map 2:  Plot Map
Map 3: Comparison Map Interview someone documenting how they celebrate the holidays.  Compare and Contrast
Map 4:  The Whos: List 3 character traits that proves that the Whos are courageous characters.  With each trait you must support with evidence from the story (and movie)

This week we have focused on "a survivor of the Boston bombing."

Students had to complete a vocabulary practice sheet for homework and we have been working on reading strategies before, during and after the story.  We will finish discussing this story on Monday and then students will have a test on Tuesday.

Grades

I have updated my grade book and if students have not turned in missing work, the grade is a zero.  I wanted you to know what their grade will be if they choose to not turn it in.  Students who did not do their homework last night received a zero or failing grade today.  Please have students turn in missing work to bring up their grades.  I still have a stack of work turned in late that I need to grade and update next week. 

Tutoring is offered every Thursday.  Please send in a note by Wednesday so that I know that your child is staying and I can have worked prepared.  They must be picked up by 3:15.  This is a great time to work on notebook organization and grammar!!

Students should make sure notebooks are organized.  They should read a novel every night and they have Folklore brochure to work on.  All pictures should be completed before tomorrow.  Information can be filled and they can use the literature online.


Tuesday
Make sure to finish drawings on brochure. Students also need a note if they want to stay for tutoring. Students should bring a note to me by tomorrow saying they have permission and will be picked up by 3:15.

Thursday
Students need to finish brochure at home tonight!  They can access the story/literature book online or they can get a literature book from me before they leave.  This was actually due today. 

Students have an article that they read in class about cellphones.  They have a sheet that is due tomorrow about citing textual evidence.  This is due tomorrow.

30 Books
Students have a 30 book challenge (requirement) for this school year. Please make sure they are reading every night.  They have specific genres that they are supposed to be reading.  Check their notebook pages 15-21.

This Week!!

This week is a little crazy!! We were out for a parent conference day and now students will be attending a field trip. 

October 9th (Thursday Group) for field trip is: Mrs. King, Ms. Spence, Mrs. Wooten and Mrs. B Smith.
October 10th (Friday Group) for field trip is: Mrs. Watson, Ms. Knox and Mrs. Dale

This Week

Students still have the chance to retake the grammar quiz and "He Lion" test

This week we are reading a myth.  Students will be able to identify cause and effect relationships, determine theme, and cite textual evidence.

I will introduce Greek Mythology and then we will be reading "Arachne" in their literature book.  Students will have an open book test on this in the middle of the week and a quiz on pronouns at the end of the week.

I have given many book talks to interest students in reading.  I will continue to find books talks and book trailers to share.  Students are required to have a novel to read at school everyday.  They should be reading at home each night.  Students should be keeping a reading log and they have a book challenge of  30 books.  Please ask them about the book challenge.

This Week

Students are working in teams while looking at folklore.  Each team is responsible for identifying the plot in the story, creating a plot chart and determining the characteristics of folklore in the selected story.  They also need to be able to identify the elements of a story.  Most groups are finished and all teams will be presenting their story and evidence tomorrow.

I started checking notebooks today.  Students are required to keep a notebook with daily bellringers and notes.  Students are required to keep it organized and labeled.

Welcome!

Welcome 6th graders!! I am looking forward to the 2014-2015 school year! I hope you enjoyed your summer and you are ready to begin a new adventure.  Thank you for coming out for SBMS open house.  If you were not able to make it, I am providing you with the same paperwork and an updated flip chart. 
On Monday, we are going over procedures and expectations.  Then we will begin our Folk Lore Unit. The first story that we should be reading is "He Lion, Bruh Bear and Bruh Rabbit."  This will be in our literature book.

4th Core students will receive their progress reports in the morning.  I was not able to get onto the Internet to print their progress reports today due to technical problems.  4th Core students also  have an extra day to study for the test on "The Case of the Speckled Band."

This Week

We have started our new and last unit "Figure it Out." This is our mystery unit.  Students will be able to identify the elements of mystery, to describe appropriate vocabulary (Detective's Dictionary), analyze a mystery, formulate a theory and solve the mystery.  Students will also look at several scientific mysteries.

One pager:  Illustrate your favorite scene from your favorite story on courageous characters that we have learned about so far.  Provide a quote that goes along with your illustration.
