This Week

We finished looking at our first "Courageous" Character, Brian.  This week will be looking at Bethany Hamilton, a shark attack survivor.

This week

We have started our new unit on survival.  Students will be looking at a variety of literature that focuses on how acts of courage contribute to one's personal survival or the survival of others. 

This week we are starting "Hatchet."  We are looking at conflict and characterization.  Monday we talked about skills that are needed for survival.

This week

Students have been working on make up work and turning in any assignments that have not been graded.


I gave everyone a progress report, a letter to parents and a notebook check to complete with parents. Hopefully, this helped with any questions about missing assignments or grades that need to be made up.

We read the Drive-In Movies this week and we are now working on a heirloom paper.  Friday they will write an 11 sentence paragraph and we will also discuss theme.

This Week

This week we read "Becky and the Wheels and Brakes Boys."  Students looked at characterization, plot and theme.  I was not able to find the story online but they can use the literature book online and read the story.  I also have paper copies of the story for students that ask for it.

September 21st-25th

Monday
We finished discussing "Arachne" and students will have a test on the story tomorrow.  See previous post for the a copy of the story.

Tuesday
Homework:  Students need answer the question, What is symbolism? on page 11 in their notebooks.  They must also write about their most memorable birthday whether it is really good or really bad. 
Students received a new reading log today.  They must be reading every night, writing a summary and getting a signature. 



Students will take the test and then we will begin a new story called "Eleven." 

Wednesday
We will finish reading "Eleven" and answer questions 2 & 3 on page 12 in their notebooks.  We will continue to discuss Characterization, Plot, Theme, Point of View and Symbolism. 


Thursday
Students are finishing plot, conflict and point of view.  Friday they will focus on figurative language, theme and sensory language.

This Week

We are starting Mythology this week.  Students will be reading "Arachne." We will focus on citing textual evidence, how culture shapes identity, elements of a story, characteristics of folklore, and characteristics of myths.

Students have an interactive notebook for my class.  So far we have the first 10 pages completed.  Please look in their notebook and see if they have these completed and stapled in.  (tape is an option as well) We spend a few minutes everyday organizing their spiral notebook.  There should be a table of contents in the front of every one's notebook.

Write a letter to the teacher stating that you have looked at your child's notebook, read the website and reviewed the Book Challenge and novels or books read so far.

Welcome back! I hope everyone enjoyed their extended weekend!
 This week we will finish "He Lion, Bruh Bear and Bruh Rabbit."  Students will have an open book test tomorrow on the story and we will begin our next story "Arachne," a Greek myth. 
Reading Notebook:  Students should have something on the first 5 pages.

Homework: Read 20-30 minutes each night and look over notes.

This Week

Today we went over the characteristics of Folk Lore and the different types. Students should be able to identify these characteristics in a story.  We will review the elements of a story before students begin group work on folktales tomorrow.  Also, ask your child about the 30 book challenge this year!! Students should be reading every night.

Welcome!!

I have waited until the first few days to post so that students and parents are adjusted for the new school year! The first few days have been wonderful and the students seem really happy.  So far, students have brought home a few forms to be signed and we need to collect all forms by Friday. 

The first nine weeks in my class we will be focusing on Folklore.  We will begin in Unit 6 in the literature book. Pages 760-763 describe the types of folk literature and their characteristics.

THIS WEEKEND!!!

Make sure you have completed both stories Lesson 9 and 7 using RUNNERS!! Don't forget EACH step of RUNNERS. Hopefully, you were able to complete this in Core 7 but if not take a few minutes this weekend and do it.

Tuesday we will do fun ELA reviews and I will give you a practice EOG Test on Wednesday.    Don't forget Thursday and Friday we begin real testing for Science!

This Week

Students have a new reading log that will be graded on Mondays.  Please make sure that students are reading every night and filling out their reading log.  Parents must sign these at the end of the week.



We go to the library every Wednesday to check out books.  I really work with students on finding novels that I think that they will like.  This nine weeks students have specific genres to focus on... (Science Fiction, Mystery and Free Choice) They will need a novel in my classroom everyday. 

Students chose a Book Report to complete with the novels that they are currently reading.  The Book Report is due March 20th.  We are focusing on Science Fiction and Mystery.  Please make sure your child is completing the report on a novel they are reading now and that it fits the genre requirement. 



Ask your child about argumentative writing! We are looking at persuasive writing, arguments, claims, reasoning, and supporting arguments.

This Weekend.... PROJECT

Some students have not finished their project (see previous post).  Please have them work on it over the weekend.  

Suggestions if you do not have Powerpoint or a computer:

-Hand write information that you find on your subject using the guidelines provided or save it on your notes on your cellphone.
-save pictures on your cellphone
-or write down the website that you find pictures that you like.

-Use a cellphone or tablet
-Go to the public library
-Go to a friend's house or neighbor's

Once you have collected your information then you can use the first few minutes of class typing it into your Powerpoint.



You can also save your information to a flash drive.....however, many students who do this come to school with an empty flash drive. .... So double check and try it on another computer.

We are starting a new project this week and students are required to choose a courageous character and create a presentation to share with the class.
What does courageous mean?

What obstacles do he/she overcome and how?

Who/what did they rely on to get them through?
What can we learn from them?
Where are they today? How has their outlook on life changed?
Must have 6-10 slides-PowerPoint or Prezi
